In this milestone tenth issue of It’s Freezing in LA!, we explore both the ‘bad’ and ‘good’ of our relationships with plants and ecosystems. We cover the polluters, technocrats and companies erasing critically important green and blue spaces. Then, we turn to new ideas and alternative conceptions of ecological systems. Across both we move through space and time: from colonial Botanic Gardens in India to generations of farming families in Latvia and modern Silicon Valley pundits. We hope that the stories and ideas in this ‘Plants’ issue might influence your own sense of the greenery around you.

Highlights

  • Chris Saltmarsh, co-founder of Labour for a Green New Deal and author of critically-acclaimed Burnt: Fighting for Climate Justice, on tree-hugging and HS2.
  • Artist and writer Hana Pera Aoake on Māori worldview emphasizing the deep, non-linear interconnections between the people and their plant-relatives.
  • Former Head of Legal at Friends of the Earth Gita Parihar on Rights for Plants.
  • Editor of The Slow Grind Georgina Johnson on weeds and their history.
  • Award-winning journalist Karthik Shankar on colonial botanic gardens in India.

This issue is the final to be edited by IFLA! co-founder and outgoing Editor Martha Dillon.
